Escaping the Odds is a podcast series that highlights individuals who were impacted by the criminal justice system and who are now entrepreneurs and business leaders. The podcast was started by Aaron Smith after he spent nearly a decade behind bars due to his involvement in a large-scale heroin operation in Chicago. While incarcerated, he had a drastic mindset shift and switched up his hustle. Aaron is now an entrepreneur, podcast producer and mentor, whose goal in life is to help others switch mindsets and hustles.
Senator Terrell McKinney
Sen. McKinney is the Nebraska State Senator of District 11. He is an advocate of prison reform and helping the root problems to fight against overcrowding and recidivism.
Jeremy Bouman is the CEO of RISE.
RISE is the largest nonprofit organization in Nebraska focused solely on habilitative programming in prisons and reentry support. At RISE, transformation starts pre-release and continues post-release. Our inside/out model bridges incarceration to the community and considers all the critical steps in that journey.
In addition to in-prison programming, RISE offers a business development program called The RISE Business Academy for system-impacted people stable in their reentry living in the community, an employment program for RISE Graduates, and a Youth & Family Program aimed at connecting and healing families of the incarcerated.
